Françoise Marinier, jeune fille volontaire, n'accepte pas qu'on lui impose un mari. Elle quitte sa famille, s'établit à Paris où elle trouve un emploi de secrétaire chez une artiste en vogue : Édith Mars. Celle-ci, compréhensive, favorise les amours naissantes de Françoise et d'un attaché d'ambassade. Édith est la maîtresse du ministre de la Justice et les parents Marinier qui débarquent croient que c'est leur fille qu'on entretient. Si Mme Marinier s'accommode de la chose, son mari se scandalise. Grâce à Édith, toute confusion dissipée, le père obtient son avancement de magistrat et Françoise convole en justes noces.
