Le 21 mars 1962, Jacqueline du Pré interprète pour la première fois le Concerto pour violoncelle d'Edward Elgar au Royal Festival Hall de Londres. Son interprétation la propulse sur la scène internationale à l'âge de 17 ans, faisant bientôt de ce concerto son œuvre emblématique. Sa mélodie plaintive résonne inévitablement avec une histoire tragique, celle d’une soliste au génie fulgurant tragiquement stoppé lorsqu’elle se découvre atteinte d’une sclérose en plaques alors qu’elle n’a que 27 ans.
